What

For us Filipino, it is very natural to just speak our native language but time will come that we will be facing circumstances that need an involvement of the English language. With this, it is very important to start learning English as young as possible.

Who

Every kid must be taught to speak their second language. But do take account the gender difference in learning. Young girls have better and faster pick-up than young boys so don’t ever compare the progress of different gender.

Where

Home is the place to start teaching English. You don’t need to have a formal class time for this as you can just incorporate it into any activity of the day. But for some, it really helps to have a set schedule for English time lesson.

When

The best time to start teaching English to kids is while they are learning their first one, so basically it is the earliest time possible. Starting to teach English to kids at an early age has lots of advantages like it is still the time where they enjoy play-like activities so you can teach him any time of the day and at any scenario. Another reason is that they don’t have much school activities yet so they have many times to absorb the English lesson you will be having.

Why

Time will come, even at a young age, that your child needs to use the language and it will be less advantage if your kid can’t speak or even understand any of it. You wouldn’t want your child to feel less confident in front of other kids who has good English command.

How

There are stages on how to effectively teach a second language to your child – speaking must come first before reading and writing. Start with a simple conversation like usual phrases or greetings like, “Good morning,” “Good night,” “How are you?” “What are you doing?” Simple words can also make you start teaching; words like, “cat” “dog” “water” “toys”. In time, a child will eventually add some words like, “a” “the” “an”, for a complete thought. If you start teaching him and there will be a time that he doesn’t want to speak or absorb any of it, let him be. Don’t force him because it should come naturally.

English materials like English picture or book, English flash cards, and English chart can make your kids enjoy more on learning this language. So start investing in it and make sure to use them regularly. Moreover, there are many Children Shows that are made to teach English to kids so let them watch it regularly. Lastly, don’t literally tell them that they made a mistake if in case they did one. It will just make them bad and be discouraged. Try correcting their mistake by repeating it with a correct one; by doing this, they will realize that it’s a mistake and they will correct it on their own.

Teaching English shouldn’t always be stressful, take advantage of free hours and fun activities on which you can incorporate teaching English without your kid even realizing it.

  1. This is great. English must be introduced at an early age. I admit I am not very good at English because I was not introduced to it at an early year. Now I am struggling especially if I am made to speak before an audience.

  2. While we love our own language, we really need to help our children develop their “English”. Students today are getting competitive and communication is a big factor to succeed.

  3. Relate to the max. Hindi ako magaling sa English, that’s why I really made sure that my children are introduced to the language at an early age.
